I feel grateful for having lived a full life without ever having - TopicsExpress

I feel grateful for having lived a full life without ever having to go to war! I think that I have been fortunate to have lived in a brief moment in time where it was not required of me! Almost every generation of my ancestors have been involved in wars and have suffered terrible consequences. I saw it on the faces of my uncles. They had quiet moments in their lives not wanting to remember the anguish of seeing others suffer. Whenever they did talk about it they were in tears and almost always somewhat drunk. It was just their way of dealing with it. I dont hold that against them but I respect their patriotism and their love for freedom we now enjoy. The other day I was completing some tree trimming when a senior gentleman asked me to give him a quote to trim the trees over his power service to his house. He was wearing a cap that had a badge celebrating Navy service in the 2nd world war. I asked him about it and he was quick to tell me he had served on a destroyer twice during the war. He recounted that he had miraculously lived through 2 torpedo attacks and witnessed hundred of men and women killed there. I also saw the tears running down his cheeks testifying of the horror of the event. I did his work and when he asked me how much he owed me I looked at him with tears in my eyes and replied Nothing Sir - This ones on me! Thank you! My way to thank a veteran for the peaceful life I have enjoyed for 62 years!
