I feel terrible for all my friends in B-ham and Atlanta who are experiencing this weather and gridlock. For years Ive been more than sick of hearing Yankee friends poke fun at Southern schools for closing when theres little to no snow, or when an ice warning causes cancellations and then doesnt produce. See, when schools hold off too long and dont make overly-cautious decisions and/or city governments downplay an event that winds up being more dangerous and widespread than predicted in favor of not looking like overreacting Southerners scared of a few snowflakes, disasters like this are the inevitable result. Southern cities are ill-equipped to handle these weather conditions which they rarely experience, and in the rural South were even LESS prepared. Where in the fresh hell would my county get the money to buy salt trucks? And why, when we would rarely ever use them? But yes, our schools would and should cancel if there is a legitimate risk in putting kids on buses to go over these bridges. That doesnt make us stupid, or poor drivers, or ridiculous, though well have to put up with jokes to the contrary. Hardy har har, call me up laughing after a regionally unheard of tornado plows through your area, or people where you live start dropping dead from a heat wave where temps are - *gasp* - in the 90s. Dont worry, I wont laugh at your misfortune. I may say a Bless your heart or two, though, remembering what grade-A buttholes some of you were when we shut down things over treacherous road conditions that your snow plows, salt trucks, and AWD winterized vehicles could easily handle. But while I dont find the situation laughable and I do feel for the people in Atlanta, can we pleeeeeease start calling this situation Freezenik 2014?
