I feel the need to say a couple of things about suicide. I realize - TopicsExpress

I feel the need to say a couple of things about suicide. I realize some of you may disagree with me, but Im not here to debate. Just simply put my thoughts into words. Im sure most of us have been touched by suicide at some point in our lives. Ive experienced first hand the utter devastation of the aftermath of suicide. Its a loss always surrounded by the feelings of What could I have done to help? or How could I have missed how sad they were? Suicide is a very violent act (murder) and one that we would try in a court of law if it was done to an innocent victim. Thats the part that always overwhelms me. That path to suicide is such a lonely journey. Such much so that the person desensitizes themselves to the violence. That they dont associate themselves as a person that they couldnt bear to harm. Im so frustrated with the judgement towards them. Just as some of us will never experience the battle of fighting through cancer, or heart disease or AIDS or paralysis, some will never experience the affects of mental illness. It has such a shameful connotation, that people hide it and wont admit its a struggle. Yes, some people fight through it and get to a better place in their lives. Some dont. To say that a person should have chosen differently, to not commit suicide, is like telling someone who is terminally ill, that they didnt fight hard enough to get better. Its just not our place. Its our place to show love and understanding. Robin Williams was an incredible person who brought so much joy and light to the world. Sadly, he succumbed to this awful disease. Since his death (rough time estimates and averages in play here) approximately 126 more people have died by suicide. Most of those never sought professional care. We need to change that. No matter what anyone tells you, words and ideas change the world John Keating (Character) from Dead Poets Society (1989)
