I felt the same way growing up ashamed of my color because when I was a kid they took me away from a school (Rock Creek Forest Elementary) that I use to walk to from my apartment building with a bunch of other kids from nearby neighboring apartments; as well as, houses It was very diverse in races and income. When I reached the 3rd grade Everybody in my apartment complex and maybe 3 other neighboring complexes I know of got sent to a Prince of Bel-air type neighborhood with a school smack dab in the middle called Summerset Elementary that was located within a gated housing community that we got bused in and we got bused out I never walked one of those streets in that community. You see I lived in what was considered the projects to this community Lets just say they didnt prepare the teachers or the students about diversity. You see the teachers we had back RCF were adapt to dealing with ah... kids of color and the white kids I grew up with in my area were cool not just the kids but their parents too. Summerset elementary made me realize something about myself as I was being transferred from a big classroom to a small room in a library because I was wrote off as slow along with a majority of the black kids and a few minorities from my neighborhood, some kids did just fine (Blk. girls). I think now I would be labeled ADD if I was young and going to school now. RFC teachers held my attention and I excelled there. Summerset teachers just werent enthusiastic (they didnt make it fun). Back then some of us got shipped to another school and that was the 1st time I saw the small school bus that schools name was Mark Twain the small bus school.. Lol its not funny but it is because I knew those kids and wasnt till the transfer for diversity (integration) did the small bus come about. In other words those kids werent stupid. There was a history book in our class that stated that we were spear chuckers until we were basically captured and made civilized to be slaves. It made me lower my head (thats nothing to be proud about for me anyway) a kid got mad I wont say his name out of respect but some how this kid had a different history of us other than what was in that book, one that I could be proud of and now I am. But because of that out burst he got kicked to the small bus. So dont judge somebody because they ride the small bus he could be a citizen that just disagreed with the propaganda (the system) that was continually ingrained. Point! I always had a slight problem being 63 and black just because other people had a problem with it. Because of a stereo type thats been passed around that Im a bad guy because Im black and every meaning that surrounds my race is negative... Think about it Black symbolizes darkness and darkness symbolizes evil. But for the record I never enslaved a people, Had Barbecues to celebrate a hanging and then sell the black victims body parts as souvenirs. Raping married slave women. I dont know how I got way out here. We never hurt anybody and yet were looked at as dangerous, unjustified angry, undeserving of hospitality and we got a president that cant even notice us because then its favoritism. I not by no ways am racist and anybody that knows me knows this. The word black has too many negative attachments, Im going brown.. LOL! Oh after living with my father in NC for a year I improved my scores in regular classes. when I got back I attended BCC in Bethesda MD in regular classes and went the rest of the way and Graduated making the honor roll 3 times my senior year before I graduated. That was for my dad who said I couldnt keep a B average. He used reverse phycology and it worked. Now I thank God for where I am today that Im not some backward racist prick. I realize people are people and theres weirdos in all races.. What do you do??? Give everybody the benefit of the doubt. Everybody white is not racist and everybody black is not a Basketball player, Musician, Sports, drug addict, pimp, dumb, lazy, or just a mailman. Not that theres anything wrong with that, I use to be one. Some black people are Electricians, Engineers, Photographers, and anything else they want to be other than the stereo types. Lol Were people like everybody else and we all have a family member that makes us hold our heads from time to time in all races. Right
