I finally got around to watching a video that has gone at least semi-viral of the IS forcing a Christian to convert to Islam and then beheading him anyway. This shook the last sense of disconnectedness from these atrocities. They chose beheading because shooting was too humane. They wanted him to suffer. And the term beheading is too benign for what befell this man; I will tell you it was not quick. I will not describe it here, nor will I share the video. If you have the steel to face this level of evil, you can find it, and I encourage you to educate yourselves. This horrifying, barbaric act is being perpetrated against children...CHILDREN!! Pray that God will be a shield for the Iraqis; that He will send the armies of heaven to rescue his people. Pray that he will sear the conscience of those in IS and stir them to repentance. This is why Jesus had to die such a horrible death for us...because we are capable of inflicting such horror on each other. If any in IS turn to Christ, their punishment will be laid on Christ, and they will be forgiven. But it occurs to me that groups like the Iraqi Christians are the people for whom Revelation is written. If the members if IS continue to oppose God, it is written about them that it will be said when the third bowl judgment is poured out on the fresh water so that it becomes blood: “You are just, O Holy One, who is and who always was, because you have sent these judgments. Since they shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets, you have given them blood to drink. It is their just reward.” (Rev. 16:5-6) Jesus Himself commanded us to pray for these people who commit such despicable acts that they would take the first option and allow Christ to take the punishment for their atrocities; otherwise the third bowl judgment is only part and also just the beginning of the punishment in store for these evil men. Even so, part of me has to echo the prayer of the martyrs in Revelation 6:10: “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you judge the people who belong to this world and avenge our blood for what they have done to us?” I call on all my friends and family to pray for the persecuted Church in Iraq and Syria and to look for ways to assist organizations committed to helping them.
