I finally spent the whole day today watching this whole series for the first time. Pretty amazing and it seems there are at least a few revelations that challenge previously accepted beliefs about Slavery and Reconstruction. I think of all the periods of American history, my interest in the period of Reconstruction through the ending of the OLD Jim Crow and the Civil Rights era is partly because of the amazing resilience of those individuals who stood out during every major oppressive time and event to fight for freedom and the advancement of mankind. I say mankind instead of black people because really, any advancement in civil rights IS an advancement for humanity as a whole. The list of heroes is endless, both black and white, men, women and children. The lessons learned during this long struggle continue to reverberate among other minority groups who are currently oppressed in some way, as they draw upon those things learned to further their cause. We must continue to educate and tell these stories over and over, or history will repeat itself as it has already started doing.
