I find it interesting that Mr Turnbull has labelled the plan to send asylum seekers to Papua New Guinea as cruel. Does he have any reservations about the Coalition’s policy of recklessly towing boats into Indonesian waters? What does the Opposition leader think about these comments? Also Mr Turnbull failed to address the fact that the Prime Minister is considering a further increase in Australia’s humanitarian intake from 20,000 to 27,000 (this follows an increase from 13,750 to 20,000 within the last year). In contrast if Tony Abbott is elected, he has promised to wind this intake back to 13,750. Labor recognises that Australia has an important role to play in providing asylum for people around the world fleeing persecution; but we also know that we shouldn’t give priority to those who risk their lives to come to Australia via boat. Otherwise as political correspondent Phillip Coorey pointed out this morning: “Those stuck in refugee camps in hellholes such as Burma, south Lebanon and the Sudan, without any means to pay, would have no hope.” LIKE and SHARE if you think Mr Turnbull should carefully consider his own party’s policies on asylum seekers before attacking the Government’s plan.
