I find myself thinking that one of the reasons Seattle might be bike-friendly is that its a tad car-hostile. And I dont mean in the sense that the bikes are displacing cars; Im talking geography and road planning. The area around the Troll is a criss-cross of roads with narrow sightlines and only 2-way stop control. I watched a motorist almost plow over a dog walker last night, and the dog walker responded by kicking the side of the dudes car... While Im not pro-driving-faster-than-you-can-manage, from my vantage point it seemed that the biggest problem was that there was really no way for the driver (who had no stop sign) to have possibly seen the dog-walker coming into the street, nor the dog-walker to have seen the oncoming car. Im thinking if I lived here and was close enough to work that I could just whip myself into shape, Id sell the car and bike or walk mostly to decrease the risk of death in a vehicular accident. (Note: I am in no way against this city planning, if its intentional ;) ).
