I finished reading Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. This is the Louise and Aylmer Maude translation. The book included a short biography of Tolstoy by Aylmer Maude who was also his friend. This biography was a great help to me reading Tolstoys work, to understand the social setting of 19th Century Russia as well as Levin, the character who seems to speak for Tolstoy, and his spiritual crisis. Through Annas and Levins characters and the people around them the book explores the Russian social scene of the upper classes. The rigid social structures suffocating the country are shown throughout, especially in the difficulty in arranging a divorce where a marriage had clearly broken down. This is really a story of free will and a search for meaning. Neither is easy to do and for Anna it ends tragically while Levin finds peace. I highly recommend this book.
