I finished this two hundred and fifty paged inspiring as well as emotion drawing, New York Times’ No.1 selling book; “The Last Lecture,” just before I de-boarded at Rohini-East Metro station. This book came to be a legacy of Professor Randy Pausch, a great American computer scientist, who fought very hard to tackle the pancreatic cancer disease but he lost the battle and died on July 25, 2008 and the book was published in April of that year (it was at the time of largest number of Tibetans till date gathered at New Delhi and protesting against Beijing Olympics). Though first-to-last page of the book needless to say a next to the Shif Kara’s “You Can Win,” I am especially impressed by the 33rd chapter that he titled: “Treat the Disease, Not the Symptom.” So I thought this would be an interesting if I could share to others. Here it goes the story with a little shuffle on the original sentences. Years ago, there was a lovely young woman who was a few thousand dollars in debt. She was completely stressed out about this. Every month, more and more interest added to her debts. And her burden seemed getting heavier day by day. Sometimes she even suffered nightmares because of this reason. To deal with her stress, she went every Tuesday night to a meditation and yoga class. That was her only free night in a week, and she said it seemed to be helping her. She breathed in, imagining that she was finding ways to deal with her debts. She breathed out, telling herself that her money problem would one day be behind her, no matter what a big amount it would be. It went like that, Tuesday after Tuesday. But her problem was yet not over. It was at the time that Randy used to date with the young lady. One day she told this to him. He looked after her finances with her and came up with a suggestion that will be her best solution, if she gave a heed. The man of logic, reason and calculation figured out that if she spent four or five months working a part time job on Tuesday night, she could actually pay off all the money she owed. So he asked her, “Why don’t you get a job on Tuesday night and skip yoga for a while?” She took the suggestion and did a Tuesday -waitress job. Soon she could go back to yoga and really breathe easier. …………………..I hope you got the message why he called: “ Treat the Disease, Not the Symptom.”
