I first heard this song in 1971 at a place called Promitory Point, or, The Point, if you will. Its a slice of the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan on the Southside of Chicago where I was taught how to make a Conga sing. Any given summer night you would find up to 30+ of the baddest sets of hands to every touch a Conga, Djembe, Tambourine, Shakaree, etc. Those men and women, including my Mom, are the reason I will very smoothly, and in the spirit of musicianship, dominate every drum circle I participate in at the four music festivals I plan to attend this summer. Anyway, What a time it was, and I post this song not only because I dig it, and its message still has significance today, but also to celebrate lesser heard music that represents the era I was born into. Music was my Daddy. Now its my friend. Black is Beautiful!
