I for one am pleased to see this announcement. As the founder of Manx Business Reviews™ we look to challenge various areas from Customer Service to provision of service to the end user and to ensure they get equality and value for their money whilst providing the best possible service. I have supported the Ellan Vannin Line from its very first meeting. I am privileged to know what their plans are and what their aims are to provide not just a competitive service but one whereby it can assist and compliment that of the Isle of Man Steam Packet. Far too many people judge by what has happened in the past with Manx Line. Yes, mistakes were made but that is not to say the same will be made again. That is like putting the horse before the cart. Let us see what is put on the table and see who can offer what the public want.... competition to provide the best service at the most competitive price. Consider how many airlines fly in and out of the Island to different locations and yet that does not impact on other providers. It does however enhance what is available and makes the Island more accessible. If those providers were to rely solely on Island trade and residential use, then yes many would fold overnight. Do you think this factor had not been considered? It wouldnt be a good business plan if that had not been considered in the grand scheme of things. What has been considered is a corner of the market that EVL is confident it can meet. As a result the forecast is that employment will be created and indeed apprenticeship schemes. The retail industry can expand, which lets face it, this is one area we do know and we know that the public are crying out for more range, for shops to come over and sell their goods and services whilst the IoMSPCo is still able to maintain its current workload. Other things to consider is that different ports can be afforded to locals and indeed tourists alike. Given that, how much additional revenue could potentially be brought into the Island during peak periods such as the TT by an additional service provider? There are many that like to look for issues, faults, downsides but not many will look for solutions and potential gains. The Government must not be allowed to permit monopolies, there must be a freedom of choice as there is with the telecoms market. Think back to when it was only Manx Telecom and no competition. It now has competitors and indeed Wi-Manx has just been awarded a licence to provide a competitive service on phone products and services. How much has the pricing structure changed as a direct result of competition? Has Manx Telecom gone bust? Competition is healthy! All the public want is to be afforded the right of choice and pay an equally competitive price for a service that can be provided by any provider and not just one and feel they are being ripped off.. Its ok talking the talk, lets see who can walk the talk
