I forgot how beautifully lyrical, guttural yet ethereal-like the Irish Language/Gaelige is... until tonight, that is. Cant say I understood much from my Leaving Cert & OLevel days (failed Irish in both!) but Aisling Ghéars production of MAKARONIK by Dave Duggan (writer) in the Playhouse Derry – a multi-lingual sci-fi drama (in Irish mainly, English a little (also minutely abbreviated on visual screens but not enough) & Empirish (strangely the easiest for me to understand & follow of all) was New World Brave & I honestly think curiousity edged on something quite brilliant, I think. Set in the year 2084 with subtle echoes of Orwell, Huxley & even Friels Translations – it was all about language, mythology, history, culture and memory. And love – of tongue & two. A strange, unusual beautiful offering. Ive never seen/heard such as before nor can imagine same again on such a level. It did infuriate me that I couldnt understand a lot of the words but the actors Cillian OGairbhi (Diarmuid), Mary Conroy (Grainne) and Liz Fitzgibbon (Makaronik) mirrored well facial expression, tone, posture & stance that for those of us not versed as Gaelige could grasp. They were exceptional. I only wish Id paid more attention at school. I only wish, we, as a nation, respected our native tongue more... And tonight, afterwards & aware of words, four of us cheered sláinte by glass/cup in a local haunt, shared brollies beneath November rain & hugged a slán abhaile under New Gate before trepping home around corner, out the road a wee bit or across border to Inishowen into the thick of wet night & accent anthology of being sung to & sprung from a leash of language bold & proud. Unfortunately MAKARONIK was only in Derry one night but its in Maghera (Co Derry) on Sat night & then in the Project Arts Centre, Dublin, from 11-15 November. Go see, hear, feel & earth yourself :))
