I found out I was selected for Chief Petty Offer in mid-July 1995. Today, I was honored to meet the next crop of Chief Petty Officer Selects from the Augusta area. 19 years - NINETEEN YEARS - since I got the call myself. Wow doesnt begin to explain it. Not one of these new Selects were in the Navy when I made Chief, and a choice few werent even in the Navy when I retired in September of 2003. One of the things Ive always been grateful for is the Chiefs Mess continuing to embrace the participation and attendance of retirees. Every initiation/induction Ive attended has treated me and the other retirees as if we were still on active duty - especially when it comes to passing on wisdom to the current years group of future Chiefs. Carry on shipmates, Congratulations to all those selected. Theres a very, very good reason - steeped in tradition and history - for why the Navy does things differently than the other services, and I know youll carry that forward to the next generation...... Did I say NINETEEN FREAKIN YEARS!?!?! Thank GOD none of them (yet) were born after I made Chief!!
