I found this on a different site and thought that it would be appropriate to post in here as well. I just had an emergency with one of my baby boys yesterday and thought that he got into some sugar free gum that had xylitol in it which is deadly to dogs if some of you dont know. It was going to be $700 to keep him at the vet over night. Luckily he wasnt lethargic so I wasnt so worried and we did have his glucose test run at an emergency vet but that was an unexpected $87 just for my peace of mind. I usually dont leave the emergency vet under $300 so I was pleasantly surprised but please consider this when you are looking for these small dogs. My 3 pound girl currently has bladder stones. She may have to have surgery also to have them removed. I feed her the exact same thing as my other babies and she is the only one thats having issues and I do firmly believe it is because of her size. I did know what I was getting into when I got her but just make sure that you are ready. Problems dont always present themselves at a later date. My baby girl isnt even 2 years old yet and shes already having this issue. Just always consider their needs and not just your wants. It is getting close to Christmas and I see so many posts on here from people wanting free or cheap Yorkies, Shih tzus, or fluffy teacup puppies. So many of these posts say we cant afford to pay a rehoming fee but the dog will have a great loving home, etc. I am BEGGING you to consider the costs of owning a dog, especially a fluffy, teacup puppy. These types of dogs require regular grooming-$35-50 per groom, every 6-8 weeks for the life of the dog. Very small purebred dogs are usually not the healthiest of dogs. Google it if you dont believe me. Vet visits arent cheap. Teacup dogs are very fragile, broken limbs happen and can be very costly. Very small dogs arent usually a good fit for young kids. Dogs require shots, puppies require several vet visits, parvovirus, worming, booster shots, etc. $$$ These types of dogs often have allergies, more medications and vet visits. Keep in mind, most groomers and boarders will not take a dog unless it is current on its vaccinations. If you are a responsible dog owner, you will need to keep your dog on monthly flea medications. $$$ I promise, if your dog is not on flea medications, they will have fleas and your dog will be miserable. Can you afford to treat your house when your dog brings fleas inside? Fleas will probably cause the biggest issue if you cant afford monthly treatments. Dog will scratch, skin gets irritated, hair will get matted, trip to the groomer! Got worms from digesting fleas, trip to the vet! If you cant afford flea medications every month, do not get a dog. Spaying and neutering a dog costs a lot more for a very small dog. And if you dont have your dog fixed, can you afford a litter of puppies? Talk about expensive!!! Monthly Heart worm medications are a must, if your dog gets infected, heartworm treatment can cost $500-700. What will you do when you go out of town? Boarding is expensive. Do you rent your home? Pet deposits can be very expensive. Oh, and dont forget you have to feed a dog. Again, these types of dogs often cant digest cheap dog food. Specialty dog food is very expensive. Also, keep in mind that small dogs arent easy to house train. Small bladders cant hold it 8-10 hours. Pee pads are costly, carpet cleaning, or carpet replacement sure isnt cheap!! Can you afford a crate to crate train a dog? Can you buy a leash, harness, dog bed, etc? And technically all dogs in Washington and Benton county are supposed to be licensed every year as well as current on rabies vaccinations. Do you realize if your dog gets out and is picked up by animal control, the fine can be as much as $300 if not licensed? I am not trying to stir up drama or hate. I have owned pets when I was broke and it is not a good situation, so unless you plan on doing without so your dog or cat can be happy and healthy; please reconsider getting a dog until you can afford one. IF YOU TRULY CANT AFFORD TO pay FOR A DOG, I PROMISE YOU CANT AFFORD TO KEEP ONE. Please look at your budget prior to getting a fluffy teacup puppy and make sure you can take care of the dog or it will end up in the shelter. Even worse, you will be heartbroken if the dog gets sick or hurt, and you cant afford to take it to the vet. If you think you must have a dog, please consider fostering a dog for the shelters or a rescue group. This is a great way to help out a homeless dog and not incur as many expenses as owning a dog. Hope this will make some of you stop and consider this very seriously.
