I found this to be very edifying. John 15, Jesus is the Vine we are the branches… 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Where Jesus says you are already clean because of the word I have spoken. The word clean in Greek is katharos (kath-ar-os’) and it means clean, clear, pure. We are made pure, clean and clear by his word. So my Spirit filled friend Charleen asked if “prunes’ means the same thing in verse 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away;[a] and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. “Prunes” is the verb form of the same word as clean in vs 3, kathairo (kath-ah’-ee-ro), and it means to cleanse, prune and, metaphorically from guilt, to expiate, and expiate means to atone for guilt or sin. It gets better. Where Jesus says Daddy, as the vinedresser, “takes away” the branches that do not bear fruit is not an accurate translation. Our Father is a good God, He wouldn’t just take away a believer that wasn’t bearing fruit. NKJV has a footnote [a] that says “lifts up.” That’s better because the Greek is airo (ah’-ee-ro) and it means to lift or raise up. By Hebraism, expiate sin: away with, carry, etc. (Hebraism means a characteristic feature of Hebrew occurring in another language.) Jesus made us clean by His word, not our efforts. When we produce fruit, Daddy purifies us. If no fruit is produced, Daddy lifts us up and takes away all sin and purifies us. What amazing grace. What amazing love.
