I gave a journalism talk at DepEd-Calamba yesterday, and the workshop topic was,of course,Pope Francis. This is an excerpt from a highschool students feature article.I was surprised to know that the Pontiff worked as night club bouncer to support his college studies. He had a masters degree in chemistry and a degree in Philosophy.Rockstar eh.Most fascinating, however,is his belief that at the core of Christianity is compassion -- go out of the comfort zone and help the poor.Let it be clear that Pope Francis does not emphasize charity as the solution;he made it clear that the the root of poverty is capitalist greed (see previous reports about him),and it is in fact the duty of a Christian to help his or her fellowmen by addressing the root of poverty. And this is exactly what most self-righteous regular church-goers fail to understand.First to preach about God,but also first to save their own skin.Memorizes Bible verses, but does not give a damn about the plight of people other than himself. They have forgotten that Jesus Christ did not stay in the halls of the powerful; he went out to the streets to share the word of God to the fishermen, the children, women, the common folk.
