I get asked frequently, What is some advice you would give to a novice drummer looking to improve? Besides the obvious, (practice) one of the most important things I have to share is limiting yourself to one genre. Some of you may have heard me say it before. I understand that you may not enjoy a certain genre of music, but that doesnt mean that you should remain ignorant to what it is. If youre an aspiring drummer, you have to realize that you probably arent always going to play the same genre of music your entire life, nor are you going to want to. Imagine being thrust into a particular setting & not having a clue what to do. Embarrassing, right? The drummers that are well-rounded will get the gig over most. Also, whenever I practice to music that doesnt have an official drum track, i.e. my remixes, that is where I improve greatly. The creation process, I like to call it, causes you to pull from every idea youve learned so far & develop your own methods. So for people who are completely turned off from an entire genre, try not to be so closed minded! Id like to think drummers are MUSICIANS, not just drummers. Find something to enjoy in everything, & let it better you as a player.
