I got a call from the Washington State Department of Ecology. They were nice enough to answer my complaint that of the all of us dim enough to live in Longview were gassed by Weyerhaeuser Tuesday afternoon. He said that we had not been gassed by turpentine and sulphur as reported initially by the local fish wrap and announced by the company. According to him we had been exposed to the following: Methyl Mercaptan Affected Organ Systems: Hematological (Blood Forming), Neurological (Nervous System) Cancer Effects: None Chemical Classification: Volatile organic compounds Summary: Methyl mercaptan is a colorless gas with a smell like rotten cabbage. It is a natural substance found in the blood, brain, and other tissues of people and animals. It is released from animal feces.... It is also released as a decay product of wood in pulp mills. When I mentioned that the gas smelled just like oven cleaner and inhibited breathing and stung, he mentioned that some gasses smelled worse than they affected us otherwise. I mentioned that we now had two stories about what was released and that oven cleaners main ingredient was lye, so he might consider that the mill was lying to him. haha. What I am really supposed to do, I believe, is shut up and take it like a good, strong northwestern slob in silence. OK... Why not? Kids get gassed here all the time and look how they turn out.
