I got a call this evening from the very concerned mother of a 24 - TopicsExpress

I got a call this evening from the very concerned mother of a 24 year old. Her daughter had reached the worst stage of Kerataconus and needed corneal transplants. Sensing their fears and apprehensions, their doctor (also mine) gave them my number. Talking to them brought back many memories from more than a decade ago... blindness... not being able to see the faces of those I loved... falling down randomly with the inability to gauge steps... not being able to read/drive/watch TV/party at the age of 22...the intense headaches from stepping out into the sun...the days when my corneas were so badly hurt that I had to stay home with my eyes bandaged...holding on to Spike and crying my heart out behind closed doors so that I could be strong for my parents. Yet again, I thank the families who donated the corneas of their loved ones when they passed away. To the two of you whose eyes I have, Im sorry you havent been able to rest in peace. We have seen together the majesty of the Himalayas, the beauty of the world under water, the sea of humanity at the Kumbh Mela, the faces of my loved ones, the happy faces of all my kids when they see me at the shelter, gone on many road trips, read many books... We have much more to see & do together. Much much more. #FeelingGrateful
