I got a chance to talk to Shirley and Clarence Murphy about their fondest memories of Woodland and they both agreed it was the Labor Day Celebrations that were held. Shirley said she loved to see all of the people come home for this event. They described the vendors and the midway that was set up with all of the rides. Clarence told me of the foot races and the three legged races he used to run in. I asked if he ever won any and he said he did unless it was against Pauley White, he said he never could beat that kid. Clarence told me that Tony Tammaro used to give all of the $2 for racing, no matter if they won or lost. I asked how all of that got paid for and they told me that the Central Union paid for it. I asked what the Central Union was and Clarence told me that it was made up of all of the unions represented in the mill. He said his father Clarence Sr. was always involved in the unions and with the celebration. Clarence also remembered the train the brought the prisoners of war through Woodland on their way to the POW Camp in Princeton. He said every now and again one of them would escape and it caused a lot of hub bub until he was captured. He said they werent bad guys but they just wanted to go home. I asked what years that would have been and he told me around 1944 – 1946. I want to thank Clarence and Shirley for taking their walk down memory lane with me.
