I got a letter from a prospective voter, here is the question and my answer: Question: As an undecided voter, Id like to know what you consider are important challenges Yucca Valley, and what your positions are on those challenges. What will you do to enhance Yucca Valley, to encourage more businesses to open up shop here? This sewer issue is on a lot of our minds--what is your stance? Not taking a radical view and compromising is admirable, but sometimes if you take the middle of the road position, you get run over. Answer: Yuccas biggest problem are roads and the sewer. Of course the sewer is more of a water district issue at this point but we are at a point where it cant wait any longer, the Town must fully support the Water District so the public sees unity between the two entities. It is horrible what the cost is going to be for the residents but it must be done. I was a supporter of Measure U a few years ago which would have lowered the cost through a sales tax and also given the Town road money but it did not pass. The Town is now past the point of any financial assistance for the Water District, but I hope it passes and we have a sewer system soon. It frustrating that it took this long and it is so much more expensive now but we cant do anything about that now except move on. I hope the Water District finds ways to lower its cost to the residents. I would support a sales tax to improve our infrastructure, I believe that most people want a well maintained Town and are willing to pay for it. Actually a sales tax should not be necessary I really blame the state, cutting back needed funds to schools, towns and other entities and wasting their money in the wrong places, its unfortunate but I see a sales tax as the only answer for now. As towns grow revenues increase and a extra tax would not be needed in the future. As far as compromise, dont confuse that with being wishy washy, I have strong convictions about Yucca Valley its just that nothing get accomplished if no one compromises. I believe these changes would help businesses immensely as well as creating a welcoming atmosphere for groups as they come to or pass thru Town, wecome signs etc.... I am sure the Town and Chamber work together well already but possibly working together on this would help.
