I got ahold of a list of the Top Ten pizza joints in Los Angeles. Last weekend, we visited the nearest of these, Abbots Pizza. Its a little shop with a counter and high stools to the sides. I imagine it might be hard to get a spot there when its busy, but the shop had just the right number of people to be humming and not too crowded. The pizzas have a thin crust, but not the traditional New York style. Abbots bagel crust is chewy and interesting. The edges are sprinkled with poppyseeds or sesame seeds or garlic to make it more bagel-like. Shawn ordered a slice of BBQ Chicken, which wasnt the best. The chunks of chicken were too large, and there werent enough of them. The sauce was a little too thick, and the cheese looked like it had been sitting for too long. I was all set to order a slice of Popeyes (spinach, mushroom, and tequila-lime chicken), but they had this incredibly beautiful salad pizza dotted with chunks of avocado calling to me from right next to the register. I was surprised to find out they served it cold, but it worked once I topped it with sriracha. Yum! We ordered a bottle of root beer to go with our pizza. It wasnt cold. Boo. If someone asked me to recommend the best pizza Ive had in Venice, Id send them a block over to Gjelina to eat gourmet slices while perched on milk crates in the side alley, but for a summery, fun hearty slice, Id go back to Abbots.
