I got into Navajo Nation tribal politics when my childrens school - TopicsExpress

I got into Navajo Nation tribal politics when my childrens school was suddenly closed. Many teachers lost their jobs and many were transferred to schools out of their area and couldnt keep their jobs. I was directed to go to the Chapter for answers. I asked for a special meeting with the attendance of the school district administration and school board. I discovered that many elected NN officials were involved with the school closure, as well as the school district admin and board. I discovered the 30-40 year conflicts with the school district. This was nothing new. I petitioned at the flea market and went door to door to gather signatures. I went to the NN Dept. of Diné Ed. and asked for their help. The question I had was, was the school district following the laws of the property they were on, the NN. I wanted to see the leases. NN Superintendent Andrew Tah directed NN DODE Legislative Assistant Matthew Tso to look for the lease. Matthew Tso said we never had to look at them before. Matthew Tso found the leases and discovered the lease and leases for other schools were expired. With a Chapter Resolution and nearly 800 signatures we overthrew the entire admin and most of the board. Matthew Tso was elected as school board President and made many controversial decisions that created tensions but dug into the 30-40 year old conflicts that many NN officials fought prior to this situation without resolve. What happens in your community is the doing of your elected officials. We live the repercussions of greed and selfishness of bad representations of our elected officials.
