I got pretty excited when Brian Greene said that there may be a way of experimentally verifying String theory by looking for predictable phenomenology that results from the shape of these compacted extra dimensions on our observable dimensions. Then he later comments that there are greater than billions upon billions of possible shapes these extra compacted dimensions can take. In fact, the so called String theory vacua landscape predicts some 10^500 different shapes contributing to different vacuum energy densities. This essentially puts designing an effective experiment to properly test String theory back on the near impossible shelf. Thus, it seems that the fate of String theory might be more tied to the LHC finding evidence of Supersymmetry. This seems one of the only aspects of String theory that has a bound within energies that we can test. If CERN doesnt find a light superpartner particle then I fear physics will undergo a major crisis. Likewise for theory of inflation, if B-modes are not verified as occurring from the CMB after adjusting for galactic dust signal background interference.
