I got the be jibes scared out of me the other day. I was traveling south on the I-5 in Stockton getting ready to take Hwy 4 East. Looking ahead I saw a bunch of break lights and people hitting their four way blinkers. So I started pumping my breaks and hit my four ways too, to warn the traffic behind me. Right at the barricade barrels at the end of the Y of the 5 and the 4 one car had slammed really hard, rear ending into another one. The car that did the slamming was stopped to the left and blocking most of the number 1 lane. The car that got hit was stopped to the right and blocking most of the number 2 lane. Which meant the traffic had to get in between them to pass. I carry flares. I got in front of the collision, stopped and ran back to flair out the collision. As I did so I passed by the gal who had rear ended the other car. She was crying and had her cell phone in her hand… I checked on her and other than a cut lip from her air bag she seemed OK. I ran up to about the half way of the split and lit my first flair. I was lighting my second flair off of the first when I heard screeching tires. I looked up and coming at me was a car spinning out of control going at about 50+. I ran into the 3 lane of the 5 and the car missed me; WHEW, careened right and slammed into the shoulder, concrete rail. I ran up to the beginning of the split and placed the second flair. Then went across to the shoulder and placed my third flair. As I was heading back the driver of the third car was getting out and had her cell phone in her hand…. This is not the first time I have encountered drivers who were involved in negligent near death encounters that had their cell phones in there hands when I checked on them. Grab a clue. How can someone who has been in a severe collision some how end up with their cell phone in their hand even though their car is completely tossed up!
