I got the call at 8:47 yesterday (Wednesday) morning that dad was slipping away and would most likely pass within the next hour or two, so we all rushed up to the Hosparus unit to be with him.....but dad wasnt quite ready despite what they said and just to prove them wrong hung on till there were just three of us remaining with him. We had been there all day and barely eaten anything, so at 10:18 my two sisters decided they would go and get us something to eat as it looked like he may hang on for who knew how long but especially through the night. They left, and as I sat there holding his hand watching tv I decided to get a warm washcloth for his face, something he loved to have done whether doing it himself or having someone do it for him when he go too weak to do it for himself. He was turned slightly on his side but hadnt opened his eyes up all day except once when the nurses came to change the linens, but I noticed as I came back with the washcloth that his eyes were open just enough that I could see them. I said Hello dad, Im so happy to see your eyes, Ive got a warm washcloth for you which I know youre going to love! As I started gently wiping his brow and cheek I noticed a tear coming from the corner of his right eye, I stopped and stared directly at him...and as I did he took one large final breath, and he was gone. It was 10:30 exactly. I cant say that he was waiting for it to be just he and I, watching tv together as we had done almost every night for the past six months....but whatever the reason I will always cary that special memory in my heart and soul.
