I got the number 10 for 10 things most people dont know about me. But like Spinal Tap, I go up to 11. 1. I won a public speaking contest on engineering subjects in my final undergraduate year at University. As a result my name is on a plaque there. There is Canterbury University, Christchurch, New Zealand, which was recently badly damaged by an earthquake. 2. I was going to do a PhD but realized that I did not like writing papers in which I had to concern myself with whether an author was RH Bates or Bates, R. H. so I left with a Masters (Electrical Engineering) 3. I have single handedly replaced engines in cars - back before everything had an onboard computer. 4. I have a love/hate relationship with onboard computers. 5. I have bicycled 210 miles from Christchurch, New Zealand to Picton, New Zealand (and then the ferry to Wellington). Several times on bikes in various states of repair. I did this before it was a normal thing that people did. I wore ski goggles due to the wind. That did not become a thing. 6. Wellington, where I grew up, can be very windy. I can hate the wind. I lived in New Zealand from 1974-1998. 7. I once sailed my 20 foot catamaran from the shore to near Kapiti island (one is not allowed to land on the island), then along the island (which was home to a very war like Maori tribe way back when) and then back. On the way back dolphins swam between the twin hulls. 8. I worked on a research ship for a while - did not like it. 9. I went to Abu Dhabi in 2011 and for three days was utterly baffled by a small arrow on the ceiling of the hotel room until I realized that it was pointing towards Mecca, directing the faithful for prayer. 10. I currently think the I live in a van down by the river SNL sketch is hilarious and I have to be careful not to do it too much around Amy Oien or it will become annoying. 11. Part of me wants to live in a van down by the river. A small part.
