I grew up calling the Hogs, rooting for the Razorbacks. How I practiced drawing that mascot, his fanged snout blowing smoke in front his furrowed eyes and jagged back! My parents are both alumni... My Papa never missed a game whether he was watching it on tv, listening on his transistor, or making the trip to watch them play at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, holding his seat cushion and dragging Ruth, Papa would always leave the game early to beat traffic, but he would have that transistor pressed to his ear. On one such occasion, Papa charged ahead through the parking lots toward their whir Oldsmobile, rapt attention on the sound of the game coming from his radio and the roaring crowd still in the stadium behind and he failed to notice Ruth had fallen and broken her ankle! Back in those days Arkansas was in the Southwestern Conference, playing only teams from Texas. Perhaps they were playing the despised Aggies that day, but part of me wonders if Papa continued listening even while realizing and tending Ruths plight! Papa had a clock in his house with a Razorback that had eyes that lit up when you called Wooo Pig Sooie! I miss you Papa.. As for my other grandmother, MaMaLane, the only times I ever heard her cuss were when the Razorbacks took the field on television. Shit! She would yell on the bad plays. I miss you too, MaMaLane. The thing about the Arkansas Razorbacks is that they are THE ONLY team for their state. Therefore, if you are from there, you love them. I am and I do. The only time I root against them is when they play my Auburn Tigers. Here is my bitter sweet WAR EAGLE!!
