I grew up in the Dominican Republic. And I didnt grow up in the major cities of Santo Domingo or Santiago, or in the luxury resort towns of Puerto Plata, La Romana or Punta Cana. I grew up in the countryside, on my grandparents farm. I grew up in the REAL Dominican Republic. My family was well to do because of our farm, but I grew up with friends who lived in one room tin shacks, friends who survived on a meal of rice and platano daily, friends who would go work in labor factories at the age of 16. Not much has changed. The Dominican Republic does not have social service programs, except for free medical care. But in DR, if you are poor...and the majority of Dominicans are...you dont have the government to lend a hand, you have to struggle to survive. The Dominican Republic is NOT a wealthy nation. The economy is based off of tourism, and the money being sent by relatives who live in the US and Europe. The Dominican Republic cannot support an immigrant population. It just cant. Dominicans are barely surviving as it is.
