I had a conversation in guitar lessons yesterday that really went down to the heart of both my musical experience and my ever going pursuit of perfection. It started with a quote from a book on classical guitar and went something like this,The impact of surreal recordings of music has caused live performance to emulate these recordings in order to avoid criticism... Live performances are to be an expression of musical interpretation and improvisation rather than a surreal performance... Most musicians I know, (if not all) desire to perform music to this perfect standard, but what I believe we are reluctant to see is the impact we are making on music. Is music meant to be played the same way every time, or is the players interpretation more important? This is the trial that all musicians are faced with when they perform the works of composers, or even their own music. Really the question is for musicians, is why do we expect perfection when it isnt possible... If you dont believe me check out Brian Ferneyhoughs String Quartet No. 6.
