I had a friend ask a question about Islam and thought I would go ahead and share the answer here so more can read it. I have read the Quran quite a bit and although I cant say completely for sure I believe I have and probably multiple times at that. I say this because I havent read it front to back I typically pick a surah (chapter) and read it through. In addition Ive read quite a bit of Sunnah (annotates how a Muslim should live their life) and Hadith describes the life of Muhammad and one of the most printed works of which there are numerous books- Bukhari are traditionally accepted by all Muslims). So to further elaborate on your question. Islam came about over 600 years after the life of Christ and the Quran did often quoted (or attempted to quote) the Bible. It wasnt until about 400 years later (if memory serves me correct) that Muslims realized the two were incompatible and then wrote of the Bible being corrupted in the Hadiths. This is because Muhammad was a tradesman who received his theological knowledge from Coptic Christians and Jews in his line of work. At the age 42 (ish) he announced that he had received revelation from the angel Gabriel revealing the works of the Quran and declaring that allah was the one true god. This is interesting to note because his tribe was polytheist and had 100s of gods that they worshiped with each family having a favorite personal one. In Muhammads case it was allah a moon god. This is why it is absolutely incorrect to believe that allah is a different (or Arabic) name for the same God of the Bible. Not the case at all, neither in character or reality. A few other interesting things to note if you decide to read the Quran is that it is not compiled chronologically but instead by the size of the surah from smallest to largest. Another very important thing to understand with Islam is that the religion is abrogated. Meaning that Muhammad stated that if he contradicts himself that what he said last is what stands. I believe this originated out of the need to marry his wife Aisha the 6 year old. He had previously made statements to the effect prohibiting the relationship (due to his relation with her father, not her age) and then changed the revelation to allow the marriage. The abrogation is very significant in two ways. One is that often when Muslim apologist refer to Islam as a religion of peace they quote texts that have been abrogated. Also as Muhammad became stronger and powerful (later in life) he became more violent and totalitarian which in turn reflected in his writing and as standing law for Muslims to obey.
