I had a good conversation Erin OBrien today. And I got much out of my lesson; training sheep dogs is such an incredible next step in my avocation of training my own dogs. What makes sheep dog training so very different from other forms of canine training is that other forms of training are discrete in nature; whereas sheep dog training is not. (A possible exception here... where I have no experience... is that of a guide dog or assistance dog of some kind, where behaviors are more likely to be continuous in nature; not the black-and-white discrete forms.) I have so much to learn about observing body language of the canine and sheep alike. I often feel inept, but walking humbly in this pursuit is part of the learning and growing process. I am so grateful to those who are helping me on my journey, and to my three border collies and the sheep... mine and those owned by others... who will never fail to teach me as long as my eyes stay open. Life is good!
