I had a great respect for General Thomas Cirino Swaka until he opened his mouth yesterday and said this: “People have been coming to me and asked what I have become. They asked what I have been thinking. Some of them have reached a point that they accused me in the local gathering of being a [sell-out] son of Equatoria,”. And, he went on saying, “You know now that most senior government officials and intellectual lost their lives. This time it will be worse simply you [Equatorians] are still powerless to protect yourselves like what the Nuer did,”. He continues by saying, “In 1992, when I decided with other colleagues to rebel from the Sudanese army here in Juba and joined the rebel movement, you, the people of the greater Equatoria, especially those of [you] who remained behind, witnessed what happened after I left. You where exposed to jeopardy and slaughter[ed] like chickens and goats by the government forces because you were not able to protect yourselves,” Wow! What a lack of etiquette by a Senior Army officer. Thomas, in case you dont know, youre just an employee of the SPLA, you are not an elected official and you certainly do not represent the Equatorians in your position as the Deputy Chief of Staff. Please be advised that the Equatorians have been safe and will remain safe not because of YOU being the Deputy Chief of Staff, not at all. The Equatorians are simply safe because they are citizens of this country and this is their own Government. No one is targeting or should target them because of who they are just as no one has targeted the Nuers for being Nuers either. The SPLA only confronted the remnants of insurgency in Juba who happened to be Nuers. By the way, if the SPLA could confront the Nuers insurgency in Juba despite of General James Hoth (a Nuer by tribe) being the Chief of Staff at the time, what difference would you make being in subordinate position (Deputy Chief of Staff)?
