I had a particularly rich meditation this morning. I have the privilege of proclaiming The Prologue to Johns Gospel during The Prelude to Midnight Mass tonight at St. Ignatius. In preparation I got present to both the nativity scene and Johns words. My immersion into Jean Gebsers The Ever-Present Origin now renews and enriches everything long familiar to me. Gebser associates the ear with magic consciousness and the mouth with mythic consciousness. Advent and Christmas begin the Christian liturgical year. After a period of hopeful waiting the Savior comes in the form of an infant who cannot yet speak. We are urged to listen to the silent night. Then, John reveals that God speaks and that his Word is God! It seems to me tonight is the story of the beginning of the evolution of human consciousness. Whats the rest of the story? I think we desperately need a new chapter. I know --- its too difficult to try to explain Gebser in a short FB post, but I cant help myself. Some day I hope to teach Gebser 101. Until then, Merry Christmas to one and all.
