I had a strange discussion on morality with a tramp in Chicken Cottage yesterday evening. I was enjoying a bucket of chicken with some mates when a tramp walked in and asked us for some spare change. I gave him a couple of quid to get rid of him but instead of leaving he sat down beside us and started talking about the recent terrorist attack at the school in Pakistan (Im guessing he assumed we were Pakistani, racist twat). He said what happened was terrible and that he hoped the Pakistani army avenged the deaths of all those children by wiping out the entire Taliban, thus ensuring it didnt happen again. We laughed and my friend replied Dude, two wrongs dont make a right. The tramp started laughing, in a patronising way, and said (paraphrased) Mate, the life you have today, that you can sit here eating chicken, condemning violence and telling people that two wrongs dont make a right, is down to bad people on your side of the fence doing bad things on your behalf. Good people have never fought evil, if they did theyll lose, so theyve always used bad people to fight evil with lesser evil. Bad people wholl do whatever it takes. Because if they didnt, horrible, far worse things will happen and you wont have the peaceful and guilt free life you have now. Wake up, brother!! Then he asked if he could bum a cigarette and piece of chicken. We gave it to him and left. A true story, Im not smart enough to make this shit up. Not sure what to make of the tramps rant. It brings up other questions, like ethics and how do you define whats good and whats evil. Its subjective. Im getting a headache just thinking about it. What I do know is that in the sick and twisted world we live in today, where people can walk into a school and shoot children, evil can only be defeated with another type of evil. Kindness and love will never get justice or stop bad things from happening again, evil will just take advantage. So, am i saying that we should all be prepared to do bad things for the greater good. Nope, we can still keep are good morals and live with a clear conscious. Like the tramp said, we dont have to get our hands dirty since theres other people who will do it for us. The definition of whats good and evil maybe be subjective but the line between them is permeable. Mankind is divided into sides and each side has good people, evil people and people who are willing to cross the line between good and evil (the greys). The good use the greys to fight the evil of other sides, to do their dirty work so that we can continue being happy, moral and self righteous. One cant exist without the other.
