I had a talk with the Moon, last night; It was illuminating. I asked if it didnt feel eclipsed by the glory of its golden sister, the Sun. People, I said, tended to celebrate its necessity in human life. The Moon just smiled knowingly as it brought out its mop and bucket, tidying up the spilt Milky Way in a swirl of stars. Its true, after all. She gives life even to me. But dont be fooled by the gravity of my expression! I bring love to Man, and provide beauty in his art and music and literature. Without me, the stars would face the darkness alone, and the tides would forsake their shores. Ritual would be confounded and the husbandry uncertain. Where would the magic and mystery of the Cosmos be without me? This was true, I admitted, as the Moon turned its radiant, sallow profile to me, gently rebuking the man-made light glaring up at it. I wax and wane, like Mans desires. I grow full of myself and my reflected light, then rest, unseen in the darkness, reminding the Earth of how lonely it would be without its friend in the night. Carefully, the Moon tucked away its mop and bucket. Ambling towards the Western threshold, clouds encircled it, like the turned-up collar of a leather jacket, and trailed behind it like smoke from an almost-finished cigarette. Ah, thats why youve left your pillow to speak with me! Untold numbers of lovers have done the same, assuaging their heartache with the thought that somewhere, their beloved is looking up at the same Moon. He sees me, but knows you not. Why do you ask me to watch over him? To which I replied to the Moon, There is no rule that states he who is loved must love in return. Heartache comes from resisting that fact. Contentment comes from merely knowing that he is there, and he sees, and that I am here, and I love. As the clouds finally hid it away, the Moon murmured, My beams bathe his upturned face, and my influence stirs his soul. Find what contentment you will in that, with the coming of dawn.
