I had an experience this afternoon that I would like to share with everyone. Shortly after 1:00 p.m. today I noticed a mother with three young children standing in front of the fire station looking inside our apparatus bays. Not being able to see what exactly they were doing I paused for a moment to see if they had already made contact with another firefighter. A few seconds later I realized that the kids were looking at the fire engine and ambulance and the mother telling her children about them. I stepped outside to ask if they would like to come in and take a look and the mother, with a smile, said they would love to. I got one of our firefighters to give the family a tour of the fire station and a look at our fire apparatus. Shortly after I parted ways with the group I began to wonder if I hadn’t gone out to invite them in would they have moved on or would they have rung the doorbell to see if they could come in. A short time later I met back up with the group to ask the mother what she would have done had I not come out and invited them in. Her reply was what I expected, she informed me that she didn’t want to intrude or interrupt us from what we were doing which brings me to my reason for this long message to you. We are YOUR fire department, we are here for YOU. If your son/daughter, niece/nephew, grandson/granddaughter, sibling, friend or anyone else you know wants to come to the fire station for a tour and to see the fire apparatus please DO NOT hesitate to stop by and do so. It gives our firefighter’s a chance to interact with the children, to educate them about fire safety, teach them about 911 and often breaks down the fear children have of firefighter’s in their turnout gear.
