I had chatted with Jon and Christoph the evening before, and they - TopicsExpress

I had chatted with Jon and Christoph the evening before, and they had recommended a circuit of the mountains ringing the hut. The evening had been perfect, a little high cloud and a light breeze but the next morning woke overcast with the tops smeared in grey. I set off anyway, grateful to have only a day pack to burden me and hopeful I might see some of the reindeer Jon and Christoph had see the day before. The walk was perfect, curling round the mountain and giving ever changing views of a saw-toothed volcanic dike that cut across the valley. Just the right amount of exposure on a ridge to make it exciting without being too scary, and a sheltered waterfall in a small valley to fill my waterbottle then a long haul up a pink gravel covered slope towards the misty summits. I reached a ridge of frost shattered rocks and a small marker place where the trails divided. The distance blew in and out of view and I scoured what could be seen for reindeer but none were in sight. While a line of sticks lead across to the summit ridge they curled in and out of mist and as all mountains look the same in the mist, and with the clouds lowering and drizzle starting I decided to make my way back rather than push on. Back in time for lunch the weather improved a little, but I could not be bothered to make the climb again .....
