I had hoped, in my lifetime, that the very necessary outrage over incidents in the 1980s as depicted in Spike Lees Do The Right Thing would someday be seen as just a terrible thing from the distant past. Those hopes are gone, and the battle for people to be treated with equal respect continues to amass casualties for those with dark skin. I am angry for those who know that they could lose their lives with one random police encounter. Its a fear I will never know...but my half of the battle has much more to do with communicating the idea to white people I know who remain clueless, and seem to have a magical stream of endless excuses for these abuses of power by those in authority. It has to stop, if were ever going to be one people...and if you cant recognize the flawed foundation upon which this nation was built, and know that these historical forces remain in motion today...youre blind, period.
