I had just gotten home from work today and hear a knock at the door. A young, somewhat stoic girl stood in the doorway. She asked if I wanted my driveway seal-coated. Smudges of sealer covered her clothes and parts of her body. I glanced over and saw a young guy waiting out by their truck. She never broke a smile and I could tell they were both tired after a long day. She gave me a price and I didnt bother to haggle, so I said OK! They did a beautiful job on my driveway, but neither one had smiled yet. I started being a little nosey and found they had been dating about six years and were looking at a new apartment tomorrow. I could tell they were struggling to make ends meet and I took a liking to them. Still, neither one smiled.... yet! I invited her into my home and proceeded to pay her. She said no one had ever invited her into their home. At this point I presented her with one of my cutting boards and told her it was a house-warming gift for them. She suddenly had a beautiful smile and thanked me for the gift. I followed her outside where she quickly went up to her boyfriend to show him the board.... he started smiling too. I hope I made their day and I wished them the best!
