I had posted the following on a chatlist and have had requests to post it here so it can be shared. Ahem. I was a delivery driver for years. Ventured into thousands of John Q. Publics backyards (UPS drivers are instructed to place packages out of sight and back door deliveries are preferred) ABUSE? Oh Good Lord, the biggest source of abuse is the average pet owner who is works and leaves his pet languishing in the backyard, a forgotten soul with dull eyes, often bereft water, shade or protection from rain or snow. I learned to carry water and disposable plastic bowls to quench those dry throats in 100F desert heat. Kibble for those who often inhaled without chewing, and pats for those sad ones whose clung to the hope that someone, anyone, might acknowledge them as they wallowed in isolation in backyard prisons. Firmly seared in my minds eye are graphic visions of dogs I found chained and hanging off of ledges, or bound so tightly they suffocated by their own entanglement, left to die by pet owners who didnt consider this fate a possibility, More than once, I slammed my truck to a stop in frantic effort to avoid somebodies free roaming dog I can readily affirm far more dogs die under wheels each day than greyhounds are injured or killed in years..I could write paragraphs on horrors I have seen and I am not unique among drivers any public servant with the right of eminent domain.. All those who serve the public witness this, all from a society who professes to love animals and points a damning finger to those in the racing industry. And as far as saving a shelter dog, how many of you are aware that no less than 3 40 ft trailers crammed with Mexican puppymilled dogs/puppies destined for shelter adoptions in the US, (mostly small breeds) cross the border into the US every 10 days? Yep, its happening as the public demand has shifted from pedigrees to rescues . While I think people are passionate and want to do in their hearts what is right, this relentless crusade vilifying the people in racing is WRONG. And I call BS on this because of this for profit crap. Good Lord. We all need to make a profit in our chosen occupations so that we may survive and prosper. I raise cattle, most years profitably I also raise a few show and hunting greyhounds. You want to buy from me, I am going to sell you my product at A PROFIT. If you buy a commodity, groceries, cars, whatever. Someone profits from that sale. Pray tell, why is this even an issue? Those who quote Google as a source of verifiable information? Please. You can put ANYTHING on the internet. ANYTHING. Sensationalist tabloid writings reeking of National Enquirer headlines are what entices and draws the public. Heaven knows Grey2K has exploited that all too well to manipulate a gullible public. Wow. Maybe I should bang my head against the wall. There are abuses in dogs, real ones, that demand our attention rather than damning those persons in the greyhound industry. They are not deserving of such treatment. Gotta go tend those Angus. If I dont take care of them proper. I wont make any money off of them.
