I had read somewhere along the line that in 1941, an old bridge over the Maumee river at Waterville had collapsed.. Since the Government pretty much had dibs on steel for the war effort, immediate replacement of the bridge wasnt likely. The Ohio Highway Department took possession of the old electric bridge (about 1.5 miles upstream), which at that point had been abandoned for a few years, and converted it into a temporary regular traffic bridge, until the replacement could be built. Today I found a photo of the electric bridge, and thought it was pretty cool, since it was obviously taken from the bridge deck (most others were taken at near river level). Then I noticed something else about the photo - there seemed to be makeshift guard rails along the sides of the bridge, and the deck surface looked relatively smooth....then realized: This photo was taken between 1941 and 1948 - the years that the bridge was used for regular traffic! :-D
