I had some questions about how I stopped smoking. Different people - TopicsExpress

I had some questions about how I stopped smoking. Different people use different techniques. I was a very heavy smoker, on 40 a day for decades. My doctor put me on the tablets Champix, They have negative side effects but also benefits. My main negative was seriously weird dreams, and heavy sleeping! One trick I used was to vary my lifestyle so I wouldnt come into contact with places that I had the habit of smoking in. I get two buses to work, and would normally smoke when walking between the two bus stops. So I decided to get off at different stops where I wouldnt have the past ritual of smoking. Id distract myself from smoking at breaks by doing something else - reading a book or changing break time. I changed shops so I wasnt going into the same place where Id always instinctively ask for cigarettes. By using a different shop I was starting different habits that didnt include automatically asking for cigarettes. If you go back on them, dont get annoyed with yourself. Just start again. If you last the first time for a week and then fail, try again and aim for two weeks, then add a day, and another, and see how long you can last the next time. If you find a weekend a strain because youd have cigarettes in the pub, plan to do something next weekend instead of going to the pub - maybe the cinema, or visit relatives, just something that gets you through that weekend without smoking. Once you get through a couple of weeks, your body adjusts to not having them, so even when you have an urge it isnt as strong. If then you fail after a couple of weeks, congratulate yourself on making that three weeks, and start again, telling yourself next time you will make it past the three weeks mark. It is a battle you can win, eventually. So if tomorrow, or next week, I fail and end up smoking, Ill just shrug my shoulders, say bugger, and start again. I know they are hard to get off, so there is no use being self-critical.
