I had the most annoying conversation last night at an arts event. It was you artists need to go overseas to prove yourselves...then come back number. Why cant art be taken on its own merit; as it is, how it is, for that person then and who they are at that time. You dont necessarily grow as an artist by stepping on foreign shores - especially if the seeds of imagination are planted early. So... do we have some kind of strange attitude in NZ towards Maori and Pacific island art as being the comfortable the talent is all here pool? Can artists struggling in far off Berlin, London and LA come home yet? Come on NZ, be serious fund the arts.. get off the rugby couch and go and see some theatre.....
