I had the motherboard replaced about a year ago - fortunately I had a local AppleCare program. But now that I found this group I realize the fix is only temporary, and the problem is bound to return. This got me thinking about preventive maintenance--- The core problem seems to be solder fatigue caused by temperature shifts. Since my machine keeps pretty low internal temperatures on normal use and only heats up during CPU-intensive tasks, I assume that if I use it lightly, not stretching it to its peak performance, it may earn me some more time until the problem arises again. I am willing to sacrifice performance (for example, when rendering a Final Cut project), I think it is better than having it burn out the circuits. So far the only solution that actually works (I have 10.10) can be found in the XCode package - an executable called Instruments, which allows throttling the CPU cores. I tried it out - started a heavy rendering in Final Cut, throttled the CPU to use only one or two cores, kick-started the fans at maximum speed (I use smcFanControl) and kaboom - the system didnt heat up at all during the (painfully slow) rendering process. Check out the screenshots. What do you think? Any other creative ideas?
