I had to steal this gem from the great mind of ISH CHEYNE. Take 2 - TopicsExpress

I had to steal this gem from the great mind of ISH CHEYNE. Take 2 min and have a read: Stand back I’m about to do Science! There is a part of your brain called the reticular activation system. It’s only about the size of the tip of your finger, but it has a massive job to do. The reticular activation systems job is to control what you are paying attention to at any one time. All around you right this second is stuff. There are people talking, radios going, advertising demanding your... attention, and some homeless guy peeing in the street. Your reticular activation system is controlling what you pay attention to. It allows you to concentrate on one thing and not be driven crazy by focusing on everything else. It can also be used to bring your attention to certain things that you are thinking about. For example when you are planning on buying a car (let’s say a Mini because Minis are awesome), you all of a sudden start seeing them everywhere. The fact is, the Mini’s were always there you just had no reason to pay attention to them, so your brain just blocked them out by chunking them as cars. Your reticular activation system just brought them into focus because you are now more interested in them. The same thing happens with people who are trying to lose weight; they make the mistake of eliminating foods they determine to be bad and by doing that begin seeing that food everywhere. All of a sudden they are being tempted to eat what they know they can’t, until they snap, eat a Tim-tam and think “oh well I’ve blown it now I may as well eat a cheesecake too”. Your reticular activation system can also be used to find solutions to things that you may not have considered. Have you ever been thinking about a problem, getting nowhere and then out of the blue a few hours later while you are doing something else the answer just hits you BOOM! Was that by accident or had you just programmed yourself to find a solution?
