I happened upon a thread last night by Beth Flynn, which amused - TopicsExpress

I happened upon a thread last night by Beth Flynn, which amused the hell out of me. I jumped in as did a lot of other people. Ultimately, she was dinged by someone because she’d made a crack about a certain religious persuasion, one of whom had made an uninvited visit to her house. You know, the doorbell rings, you go to the door and the caller wants to convert you on the spot. Beth was also visited by the Kirby sweeper guy. Unlike the religious visitor, sweeper man was fair game. No one was insulted by the wiseacre remarks made in the multitude of responses about the vacuum dude. I’m surprised a virtual execution didn’t take place. Off with Kirby’s head! Some people have a roaring good sense of humor and I think Beth is one of them. I consider myself in that camp as well. We can be (and often are) snide, sarcastic and irreverent. We poke fun mostly at ourselves and sometimes at others, but all in good fun. Beth and I mutually agreed there is often (and unfortunately) a spoil sport who jumps into a tongue-in-check thread and starts lecturing us wildebeests about our behavior or attitude. We get figurative raps on the knuckles by these humorless sorts who wouldn’t know a joke if it bit them on the butt. When someone is posting about serious stuff …. Should we go to war? Should Obama dye his hair? Okay, THAT’S a joke… obviously people are encouraged to jump in and express their opinions and then the thread is off and running with people bickering back and forth but that’s good. It’s an exchange of information and makes you think about all sides of an issue. It’s a debate. When the person posted the controversial comment he knew in advance (or certainly should know) he was stepping into dicey waters and would get some negative feedback as well as be challenged. However, when someone is joking, which Beth was, and which most people recognize … come on! Get the joke. Enjoy the joke. If you can’t, move on and don’t feel compelled to take the poster to task for something said humorously and not expressed with ill intent. That’s where the spoil sport comes in. If you don’t have a sense of humor and can’t recognize humor when you come across it, move along, little doggie, move along.
