I hate the way good speculative fiction isnt called fantasy or sci-fi, its just called literature. You dont find Margaret Atwood, Cormac McCarthy, George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, or Anthony Burgess in the sci-fi section of the bookstore. Saying that a work or a writer is good enough to elevate out of the genre just reinforces the prejudice that the genre isnt worthwhile in the first place by eliminating the distinguished works and lowering the overall quality. Its the same way comic books stop being called comic books when theyre deemed sufficiently artistic. Then theyre called graphic novels.
