I have a 18mth old basset. He suffers with colitis and separation - TopicsExpress

I have a 18mth old basset. He suffers with colitis and separation anxiety. Hes has slept on the bed Alone with me for a while now and although hes always had a bed of his own he wont use it! Trouble is my partner and I we have a superking bed and its now becoming hard to get a good nights sleep. We have tried to all sleep together but its not going well. As my basset wants to lie in the middle of the bed or across our legs and is up and down the bed which means none of us get much sleep. I feel like the worst mum in the world. I Have encouraged him to use his bed with treats and praise. If he gets on the bed and you try to move him he can become quite snappy and growl so I use a water pistol which stops that but he just wont use his bed. I realise Im at fault here as I should have worked harder at getting him into his bed. And now my heart is breaking at seeing him up n down all night. Which ends up with me letting him sleep on the bed. Its causing stresses all round which I dont want with my partner and I dont want to stress my basset. But we all need to get a good nights sleep. Is this common in Bassets? How can I get him to use his bed? Please help! Thank you x
